We’ve got some exciting news for you!

Leveled Phrasebooks

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new type of phrasebook – “Leveled Phrasebook” – available in the following languages:

• English
• Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified)
• French
• Japanese
• Korean
• Spanish
• Italian
• German
• Arabic
• Hindi
• Thai
• Portuguese (coming soon)

The English and Chinese Leveled phrasebooks will be available with translations into: English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, German, Italian, Hindi, Portuguese, and Thai. All other Leveled phrasebooks will be available with English and Chinese translations, with more to follow.

‘Topics’ vs ‘Leveled’ Phrasebooks

Up until now, the Phrasebooks available in Hello Pal have been ‘Topics’ Phrasebooks, where the phrases are categorized by topic and subject matter, such as ‘Work and Study’, ‘Interests’, ‘Responses’.

The new ‘Leveled’ Phrasebooks contain phrases which are categorized by levels, starting from Level 1 with the most commonly-used phrases, and progressing to higher levels according to the phrase’s frequency of usage or difficulty.

Leveled Phrasebooks contain 12 phrases per level, and there are 10 levels so far for each language, with many more to come.

Why Leveled Phrasebooks?

1. Structured Course for Self-Study

For those interested in learning the language, learning phrases can now be done in a structured, step-by-step way. Simply start with Level 1, then move on to Level 2, then to 3, and so on without having to figure out what to learn next.

2. Upcoming Game Modes Using Leveled Phrasebooks

Version 2.0 of Hello Pal will introduce a whole new ‘Play’ section:

This ‘Play’ section will allow you to play language-related games (single-player and multi-player). The first games that will be introduced will rely heavily on the Leveled Phrasebooks, starting with simple ‘self-test’ games for each level. Stay tuned for further announcements on this!

3. More Languages, Faster

We’ve heard feedback from many of you asking for more phrasebook languages. Since creating one Topic Phrasebook takes an enormous amount of time and effort, we decided to not keep you waiting, by offering these Leveled Phrasebooks first as they can be done much more quickly!

1. VIDEO TUTORIAL #3 RELEASED

With version 1.1.660 that was released on earlier this month, we included the ability to ‘Add Note’ to your voice messages, so that your Pal can more easily understand what you’re saying. You can type out what you said, and even add a translation and other comments.

2. SPANISH PHRASEBOOK

We have just launched the Spanish phrasebook – it’s currently only available in English but the Chinese translation should be launched within July!

We now have phrasebooks in the following languages:

• English
• Chinese (simplified)
• Japanese
• French
• Spanish
• Korean (Beta)

The above phrasebooks (apart from Spanish) are all available with English and Chinese translations, with translations into other languages coming soon. If the phrasebook is not yet available in your language, we recommend that you set your “Translation Language” (under Settings) to English, so that at least you can use the phrasebook with English translations.

4. REPORTING USERS FOR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

In our latest release (1.1.680, released on June 23), we added the ability to report users for inappropriate behavior. People who engage in inappropriate behavior may be banned without warning. It’s been a month since we launched Hello Pal, and today we’d like to announce the release of the latest version, v1.1!

Here are some of the new features in this new version (1.1.660) compared to 1.0.550:

• Add Note to your audio messages (SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS)
• Remove chats from the list of chats
• Ignore user (stop receiving notifications of messages from the user)
• “Local time” of Pal shown in Pal’s Profile
• When in text mode translation box, can switch directly to audio mode, and vice versa.
• New language UI now available in English, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese, French, Korean, Spanish, Russian
• Do-Not-Disturb mode – can specify hours not to be disturbed by notifications
• Fixed confusion: In Settings, “Phrasebook Language” renamed as “Translation Language”, because this does not mean which language phrasebook you wish to use but language you wanted to translate the phrasebook into.

Feature highlight:
ADD NOTE – Be the most helpful Pal!

One feature we’d like to highlight is the ADD NOTE function which lets you be a great help to your pal. When you record a voice message, you can help your Pal understand what you just said by adding a note regarding what you just said.

For example, you could write out exactly what you just said, in text. This would especially help people who better with reading than with listening comprehension.

If you’re bilingual, you could even add a translation!
